To avoid any possible interactions, skin should always be clean and dry before treatments. We would recommend an interval of at least one week between applying Odaban and using SmoothSkin products. This is because Odaban and other similar products often result in a toxic skin reaction, or inflammation. If there is inflammation in the skin at the time of IPL treatment there is a risk of skin burn.
No. To avoid any possible interactions, skin should always be clean and dry.
Yes, but only after treatment, not before.
No – Do not use SmoothSkin if you are undergoing a self-tanning regime. There may be photosensitive properties in the self-tan moisturisers that could affect your skin’s reaction to IPL.
Yes, SmoothSkin devices can be used year-round. We just ask you to be extra careful during the summer months, or if you’ve been away on holiday. There are some precautions to take before and after tanning – both via sunbeds and prolonged exposure to the sun, as this increases skin sensitivity (a little sun on your skin from being outside isn’t a problem!).
Tanning before using SmoothSkin:
* Wait at least 48 hours after tanning before you use SmoothSkin.
* Do not use SmoothSkin if you have sunburned skin and for as long as the sunburn persists.
* Be aware that all types of tanning darken the skin.
Tanning after using SmoothSkin:
* Your skin will be more sensitive directly after the treatment.
* Wait at least 24 hours or until all redness has disappeared before you expose treated areas to the sun.
* Cover treated areas when you go out into the sun or use a sunblock (*50 SPF) in the 48 hours after treatment.
Most areas of the body can be treated with the exception of: mucus membranes (i.e. e.g. inside nostrils, lips of mouth, ears, inner labia), directly on the genitals (including pubis bone, perineum and scrotum, or around the vagina or anus).
SmoothSkin is not recommended for use on the male face or beard, or directly on the scalp. The depth and thickness of this type of hair need to be targeted with a much higher level of energy to be effective, which means SmoothSkin is unlikely to produce the desired results. Hair density in these areas is very high, and so there’s a chance of burns being induced by the device. All the hairs close together could act as a single entity, the superficial temperature of the skin could increase above the damaged threshold, resulting in a burn.
SmoothSkin Bare has a single energy setting of 3J / cm2 that is suitable for all skin tones. It’s super speedy and lightweight with a full body treatment taking just 10 minutes.
SmoothSkin Gold has 10 energy settings, ranging from 3 – 6 J / cm2, with the latest in IPL technology to automatically tailor your treatment to your skin tone, providing a personalised treatment and maximising your results.
SmoothSkin Gold uses the latest in IPL technology to provide IPL treatment tailored to you to maximise your results. With 10 energy settings, ranging from 3 – 6 J / cm2, Muse scans your skin before each flash to automatically tailor your treatment to your skin tone so you can go longer between top-ups. We advise you use SmoothSkin Gold once a week for 12 weeks to start with, then drop down to maintenance treatments around every 2-4 weeks.
SmoothSkin Bare is ultrafast, with a single energy setting of 3J / cm2 that is suitable for all skin tones. It’s super speedy and lightweight with a full body treatment taking just 10 minutes. We advise you use SmoothSkin Bare once a week for 12 weeks to start with, then drop down to maintenance treatments around every 2 weeks.
How many treatments have you completed?
Hair growth is cyclical and IPL treatments are only effective during one of the three growing phases (called the Anagen phase). Not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time which is why you need to keep up with your treatments. You may have missed a treatment or perhaps you didn’t catch the hair at the right stage.
Remember, with SmoothSkin Bare, you can treat any stubborn areas, such as underarms, with multiple passes (running your device over the same area a maximum of 3 times).

Yes, all SmoothSkin devices are safe and gentle enough to treat the entire bikini area (including the bikini line, mons pubis, labia majora and perineum, to use the technical terms!) so if you want a Brazilian or Hollywood please feel free – just use extra caution to avoid treating the ‘inner parts’ of the bikini area, including labia minora, the vagina and anus as IPL is not suitable for treating these areas. If you’re using SmoothSkin Muse or Gold, this may also be a good time to turn on gentle mode.
Do not use the device directly on mucus membranes, the genitals or around the anus. These areas may have a darker skin colour and so to avoid injury they should not be treated.
Yes. All SmoothSkin devices are suitable for use on male pubic hair. We do advise using a little extra caution when treating – along with gentle mode if you have it available on your device.

No. Never attempt to flash a SmoothSkin device near the eye area.
Yes, you can safely treat the face, cheek and jaw line, the upper lip, neck and chin areas. However, DO NOT use on eyebrows, eye lashes, the scalp, lips, nostrils and ears.

No. DO NOT USE near bathtubs, showers, basins or other vessels containing water. If your SmoothSkin device becomes wet, it should not be used. DO NOT use if the device has been exposed to water.
For IPL treatment to work efficiently you must remove any hair from above the surface of the skin prior to each treatment, but keeping the root in place to help target the follicle will ensure maximum efficacy – and so maximum results.
Ideally yes. We understand shaving the face can be slightly daunting for women, but shaving really does give the best results. If you don’t feel comfortable shaving your face (or other sensitive areas!) we recommend clipping or trimming the hair as close to the skin as possible to prepare it for treatment. To do this, you can try using cosmetic scissors, an electric trimmer or exfoliating hair removal pads. Otherwise, feel free to wax or epilate.
Don’t forget though, for best results we really do recommend shaving. It may be scary at first but it’ll be worth it in the long run!
Of course! For the very best results from your treatment, we recommend shaving, but you can also wax, epilate or pluck any pesky hairs if you’d prefer.

For SmoothSkin Gold:
We advise treating once a week for 12 weeks initially, and then just topping up as required, usually once every 4 – 8 weeks to keep regrowth at bay.
For SmoothSkin Bare:
We advise treating once a week until you see the desired results, and then topping up as required, around once every 2 weeks, just to keep regrowth in check.
No, do not use gel. This was only needed with older IPL technologies and will only clog the nozzle and damage your device.
No – we recommend that you do not use more than once per week. This will have no effect other than to irritate your skin.
