Carefully wipe with a soft, dry cloth and ensure that the glass filter is undamaged after every use. When cleaning SmoothSkin Gold, the head of the device (gold or silver part) can be removed.  Please see the User Guide for further guidance.

In 1979, Professor Marc Clement, laser physicist, inadvertently exposed his forearm to a laser beam and discovered that his hair no longer grew in the exposed area.

Professor Clement went on to develop the world’s first hair removal lasers based on his discovery, and became an established manufacturer of medical lasers. Since then, he’s joined forces with several world leaders in light sciences to create their company, CyDen, which developed the ipulse technology. SmoothSkin has the benefit of over 30 years’ experience in professional light-based technology.

No – do not use the device over large very dark freckles or moles.

Children under the age of 18 should not use SmoothSkin. This is because hormone balances in the body are unstable and new hair growth is rapid.

No, it is not necessary to wear eye protection when using SmoothSkin.  The system is also fitted with a safety feature to prevent firing into the air. However, you should NEVER attempt to fire on to or close to the eye itself.

Yes, SmoothSkin is not suitable for use for people with certain skin conditions. We recommend you consult your Doctor or medical practitioner before use if you have any specific concerns or queries.

We suggest you seek medical advice on this as we cannot be sure of the depth or prominence of the veins you are talking about.

No – the SmoothSkin is not recommended for use on these areas.

Most areas of the body can be treated with the exception of the mucus membranes of the body e.g. inside nostrils, lips of mouth, eyelids, ears, labial folds, genitals, anus etc.

Although the device is safe for the use on the face e.g. upper lip, chin, jaw line and neck, we recommend that you do not use on your eyebrows because the results are permanent. However, you should NEVER attempt to fire on to or close to the eye itself or above the cheek line.

We do not recommend using IPL to remove the male beard. The SmoothSkin device may permanently reduce hair and could feminise the face. It may cause an adverse reaction due to the thickness of hair.

You may shave the hair between treatments, you MUST NOT wax, epilate or pluck as this removes the hair shaft that absorbs the light during treatment.

No, there should not be any glass against the skin. The glass filter is recessed back into the device.

Itchiness is a common side effect of IPL treatment. However, if you have intense itchiness which has not subsided after 24 hours, please stop using the device immediately and consult your GP before using SmoothSkin again.

Please contact our dedicated Helpline on 0303 031 1024 and give your order reference number – we will resolve the issue for you straight away.

You need to stop treating immediately.  We recommend you visit your GP / Medical Practice and ask for advice. Our trained advisors will send you a Health Questionnaire to fill out and return.  Once you have done that we will assist you and ensure you are not making any mistakes in your preparation or treatment regime.

SmoothSkin has clinically proven results, however, everyone is different. Treatment success can depend on a number of issues such as catching the hair at exactly the right stage of growth, or even hormone changes / imbalances.

This is perfectly normal, the lamp is quality engineered and has passed the highest standards of quality checks. This does not affect the power output.

DO NOT USE SmoothSkin devices if your skin has been artificially or naturally tanned recently. Your skin may be extra sensitive following sun exposure and particularly susceptible to side effects of IPL treatment (e.g., burn, blister, discolour or scar your skin). Also, avoid unprotected exposure to direct sunlight after your SmoothSkin  treatment. Your skin may be extra sensitive following IPL treatment and particularly susceptible to sunburn. Use sunscreen (SPF 15 or greater) or cover the skin.

When the Skin Tone Sensors are placed on the treatment area the blue light emitted by the Sensors is reflected back from your skin. The device then detects your skin tone is appropriate for use.

The device has been independently tested for efficacy (ability to produce the desired effect) and safety. As long as it is used in accordance with the instruction manual, you should not experience any adverse side effects.

The skin tone sensor system on the handset prevents the system from flashing if it does not detect a valid skin tone.

SmoothSkin technology is harmless to the skin as long as it is suitable for your skin tone and is used as instructed in the manual.

The device has a 2 year warranty starting on the date of purchase.  We will check for faults in materials or workmanship free of charge and replace the complete device, at our discretion. If you have purchased the device direct from SmoothSkin (i.e. not from Boots or other retail outlets) we operate a 90 Day Money Back Guarantee. This means if you are not satisfied with the results, you can return your device and obtain a full refund as long as you are within the 90 days. The 90 days starts from date of purchase.

No – if you suffer with epilepsy, the flashing light emitted from the SmoothSkin device may trigger a seizure or epileptic fit.

Yes – this can affect whether you are suitable for home use IPL treatments.  There is a full list of medications available on the SmoothSkin web site under the heading ‘Support’.  Please check this before you purchase.  Certain medications can make your skin more sensitive and a flash of intense pulsed light could cause injury.  This list is not exhaustive, if you need further clarification, please consult your GP.

NO – Do not use the SmoothSkin if you are undergoing a self-tanning regime.  There may be photosensitive properties in the self-tan moisturisers that could affect your skin’s reaction to IPL.

Yes.  However we would advise you take care as exposure to sunlight increases skin sensitivity.  We would recommend the use of an UV sun protection cream after treatment.  We recommend that you allow at least 7 days before or after treatments.

Most areas of the body can be treated with the exception of the mucus membranes of the body e.g. inside nostrils, lips of mouth, ears, labial folds, genitals, anus etc. Users should read the instructions thoroughly before use, and care should be taken to ensure you do not treat around the eye. DO NOT use on eyebrows or eye lashes.

If you need to check BEFORE you buy then you can check your skin tone against the chart here or on the packaging. If your skin is very dark then the device will not operate.  Very dark skin has a considerable amount of pigment (melanin) and will absorb more light and therefore is not suitable for IPL treatments and could burn, discolour or scar your skin.

Yes. It uses the same IPL technology used in salons across the world to achieve outstanding results. The professional products, however, allow a trained therapist to use much higher energy levels than the home use IPL products in the market today.

SmoothSkin Bare has a single Energy Setting of 3J / cm2 that is suitable for all skin tones and is ultrafast, whilst SmoothSkin Gold has 10 energy settings, 4 – 6 J / cm2, that are controlled by an intelligent “Detect and Set” system to provide a personalised treatment for your skin.

If you want maximum speed and simplicity go for SmoothSkin Bare.

If you want a tailored beauty treatment with the best results SmoothSkin Gold is for you.

The main differences are treatment area size, intensity, pain levels and safety.

A laser generally has a smaller treatment area compared to an IPL device and emits a single wavelength of light.  IPL devices produce a wide range of wavelengths (colours) of light to produce a single white flash of light. This light can appear with an orange / red glow when the device is flashed against the skin. This is normal and is nothing to worry about.

The SmoothSkin system uses a revolutionary technology formerly only used in salons and clinics called Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). When used correctly, this provides permanent hair reduction.

The melanin in the hair follicle absorbs the light and heats up which disables the hair follicle preventing regrowth. The amount of light supplied by the SmoothSkin system is carefully controlled so only the hair follicle heats up enough to prevent hair growth, without affecting the surrounding skin.

SmoothSkin is suitable for all but the darkest skin tones. If you would like to know if you are suitable, please take a look at our skin tone chart in the user manual or on the ‘what is IPL’ section of our website.

Yes, SmoothSkin can be used to treat facial areas. We understand shaving the face can be slightly daunting for women, but take a look at our top tips on the website and you can see how easy it is to treat the upper lip, chin and other facial areas. Just remember to shave the area immediately prior to every treatment to get the best results possible.

We do not recommend using IPL to remove the male beard. The SmoothSkin may permanently reduce hair and could feminise the face. It may cause an adverse reaction due to the thickness of hair.

Care should be taken to ensure you do not treat around the eye. DO NOT use on eyebrows, eye lashes, the scalp, lips, nostrils and ears.

Yes, the SmoothSkin is suitable for use on the male and female pubic area / bikini line area. However, SmoothSkin has not been clinically tested on the pubic areas. Do not use the device directly on mucus membranes, the genitals or around the anus. These areas may have a darker skin colour and so to avoid injury they should not be treated.

No – we recommend that you do not use more than once per week.  This will have no effect other than to irritate your skin.

How many treatments have you completed?

Hair growth is cyclical and IPL treatments are only effective during one of the three growing phases (called the Anagen phase).  Not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time which is why you need to keep up with your treatments.  You may have missed a treatment or perhaps you didn’t catch the hair at the right stage.

SmoothSkin offers a 2 year guarantee on faulty products.

Yes, you can safely treat the face, cheek and jaw line, the upper lip, neck and chin areas. However, DO NOT use on eyebrows, eye lashes, the scalp, lips, nostrils and ears.

We do not recommend using IPL to remove the male beard. The SmoothSkin device may permanently reduce hair and could feminise the face. It may cause an adverse reaction due to the thickness of hair.

If you bought the device from any other retailer, please contact them directly, as return policies vary per retailer.

Yes. A number of clinically approved trials have proven that when used properly, you will see significant permanent hair reduction. See user guides for more information regarding treatment regimes and how to get the best out of your device.

Yes, when buying direct from SmoothSkin you can pay part payments over 3 monthly instalments. This is only available when buying directly from SmoothSkin.

This indicates there is a fault with the device. Stop using the device and contact the helpline.

Not usually, a slight tingling or a warm sensation is generally what most people feel. However, the sensation varies from person to person. People with coarse, dark hair may experience an initial sensation similar to that felt by the gentle flick of an elastic band.

The secret to staying silky smooth is to keep at it and stick to your treatment regime. With regular use, you will see fewer and fewer hairs growing back. These hairs should also be finer, lighter in colour and grow more slowly. As time goes on you’ll be able to completely replace your shaving routine.

Make sure the power supply is firmly plugged in. Ensure the Skin Tone Sensor is fully pressed against the skin. Your skin could be too dark for treatment. Check against the skin tone chart in the front of the User Guide. If you cannot get it to work, please call the helpline.

The device will flash every 0.6 seconds. That’s 100 flashes per minute! (That’s both full legs in under 9 minutes.)

The SmoothSkin Bare device has unlimited flashes, so you’ll never have to worry about running out.

Recent trials have shown reduction of hair after just 4 treatments, so in one month you could start to see results. You can expect to see up to 92% hair reduction after 4 weeks of treatment. There will still be some hairs that need treating as you need to catch each hair in the right phase, but don’t worry, things will only get better from here on in. So from now on, it’s mostly up to you to determine what’s the right regime for you.

First, let’s talk about what NOT to expect. As for ALL home-use IPL or laser treatments (don’t believe anyone who would tell you otherwise), one treatment won’t last forever. You will need to keep treating the hairs every once in a while to avoid hair growth starting up again; but the great thing about SmoothSkin Bare is that it will prevent hair regrowth as long as you keep treating regularly, so if you keep it up, you will never have to experience stubbly legs or underarms again. Hoorah!

SmoothSkin Bare devices retail at £199.

First check that the adaptor plug is fully inserted into the handset. Make sure it is fully engaged. If the device is still cutting out, contact the helpline.

If the power bar indicators are flashing red continuously and SmoothSkin Gold will not work, this means the device has used up all of the flashes (end of life). There is no replacement or refurbishment service available for SmoothSkin.

This indicates that either your skin is too dark to treat or the sensors have not been placed against your skin properly. Have you made sure to place the head of the device and treatment window in full contact? – i.e. both small windows either side of the large treatment window should be pressed firmly against the skin.

If your skin is too dark then the device will not operate – we recommend that you take back to the retail outlet you purchased the device from. If you bought directly from SmoothSkin, then ask us about our refund policy.

Not usually, a slight tingling or a warm sensation is generally what most people feel. However, the sensation varies from person to person. People with coarse, dark hair may experience an initial sensation similar to that of a gentle flick of an elastic band. If you do find it uncomfortable you can select the GENTLE MODE to allow you to get used to the experience. See the User Guide for details.

Both operate in exactly the same way, the only differences are the appearance of the devices and the packaging.

To ensure the maximum amount of hair reduction, we recommend you do a ‘maintenance’ treatment just once per month. If the hairs treated have been targeted correctly then you should experience noticeable, permanent hair reduction.

You need to ensure you have shaved the area you wish to treat immediately prior to treatments. Due to the high power of the SmoothSkin Gold, any visible hair, stubble or debris on the surface of the skin will absorb the light energy, and will often be vaporised during the treatment. This can damage and/or mark the device. If your device is marked please remove the gold or silver front and clean as per the instructions in the user guide.

If you are still concerned please call our Helpline on 03030311024 who can give you further advice.

First, check if you have:

  • Connected the power supply with the base of the handset
  • Plugged the power supply into an electrical socket

Have you pressed STANDBY / READY button? Has the button changed from BLUE to WHITE? If you do not use the device for 3 minutes the button will return to BLUE and be in STANDBY mode which means it will not flash. Press the STANDBY / READY button and make sure it is WHITE before trying to treat. If your device is still not working you may have to return the device for a replacement.

Depending on your skin tone, the device will flash between just under 1 and 2 seconds. It will take under 9 minutes to complete a leg treatment.

Recent trials have shown reduction of hair after just 4 treatments, so in one month you could start to see results. However, we do recommend that you use for 12 weeks to get best results and once a month thereafter.

Yes. Clinical trials have shown that SmoothSkin Gold produces permanent results.

In one trial, 94% of women experienced visible, permanent hair reduction. To get the best results, you must ensure you use the device for an initial period of 12 weeks, then just once a month afterwards for continuously hair free skin.
