Frequently asked questions

IPL and particularly SmoothSkin devices have proven to be very effective in dealing with PCOS related hair-growth. However, some medications, including those that are commonly used in the management of PCOS, such as Clomiphene (Clomid) and Dianette, can cause increased photosensitivity, which can cause an adverse reaction when combined with IPL, or any light-based hair removal treatment. Before starting IPL, we strongly recommend that you discuss your suitability with your GP, double check the labels of all medications that you are taking, and, of course, complete a patch test prior to your first treatment.  If you have any questions please contact us directly, and our trained advisers will be happy to help.

For maximum results, we recommend using our most powerful device, SmoothSkin Muse.

Not at all. SmoothSkin Bare is fitted with a powerful fan to cool down the electric components, and sometimes the device may need to slow down slightly to allow the fan to do its job effectively.

The smell of burning when in use can indicate that the treatment area hasn’t been properly prepared for treatment. Skin must be completely hair-free (for best results by shaving, if hair is not completely removed it may damage the front of the device), cleaned and dried. If any visible hair remains above the surface of the skin, it can burn on treatment with your SmoothSkin device. If you are concerned STOP treatment and contact us.

Carefully wipe with a soft, dry cloth and ensure that the glass filter is undamaged after every use. The head of the device (gold or silver part) can be removed.  Please see your user guide for further guidance.

No, there should not be any glass against the skin. The glass filter is recessed back into the device.

This is perfectly normal, the lamp is quality engineered and has passed the highest standards of quality checks. This does not affect the power output.

This indicates there is a fault with the device. Stop using the device and contact us.

Don’t panic, Smoothie! This is caused by residual hairs, stubble or debris on the surface of the skin and won’t affect the device’s performance in any way, it’s purely cosmetic.

In the future, you need to make sure you have shaved and cleaned the area you wish to treat immediately prior to treatments. If your device is marked please remove the gold or silver front and clean as per the instructions in the user guide.

If you’re still concerned, please contact us for further advice.

Make sure the power supply is plugged in. Ensure the Skin Tone Sensor is fully pressed against the skin. Your skin could be too dark for treatment. Check against the skin tone chart in the front of your user guide. If you cannot get it to work, please contact us.

SmoothSkin Bare features unlimited flashes, so you’ll never have to worry about running out.

When the Skin Tone Sensors are placed on the treatment area the blue light emitted by the Sensors is reflected back from your skin. The device then detects your skin tone is appropriate for use.

To get the most out of your SmoothSkin Bare, you should use it every week to ensure all hair follicles are treated. In the first few weeks following the initial treatments, you will still see some hairs growing. Relax, these will likely be the hairs that were not treated in their growth phase (when IPL is most effective) so be sure to keep up with the treatments!

Within 4 weeks, you should be seeing a reduction in hair regrowth. Doesn’t it feel fantastic? There will still be some hairs that need treating as you need to catch each hair in the right phase, but don’t worry, things will only get better from here on in – so keep it up! Once you get the desired results, you’ll still need to continue with top-ups around every two weeks, just to keep regrowth in check.

Turn off your device and switch off the power supply at the plug. Leave for 30 seconds. Then, make sure all the power leads are connected correctly and turn the device back on. If the lights are still on please contact us.

SmoothSkin Muse features unlimited flashes, for results to last a lifetime. All products include 2 years’ manufacturers’ warranty against faults.

When the Skin Tone Sensors are placed on the treatment area the blue light emitted by the Sensors is reflected back from your skin. The device then not only detects your skin is appropriate for treatment but also tailors the power delivered to your unique skin tone, to maximise your results safely.

To get the most out of your SmoothSkin Muse you should start off by using it once a week for 12 weeks continuously. There is no increased benefit from using your SmoothSkin Muse more than once a week.

In the first few weeks, you will still see some hairs growing – relax. These will likely be the hairs that were not treated in their growth phase (when IPL is most effective). Just be sure to keep up with the treatments. From around 4 weeks, you should be seeing a reduction in hair regrowth. Doesn’t it feel fantastic? There will still be some hairs that need treating as you need to catch each hair in the right phase, but don’t worry, things will only get better from here on in – so keep it up!

Once you have completed your initial 12-week treatment period, it’s plain sailing. You just need to do a quick top-up treatment as required to maintain your results – usually once every 4-8 weeks or so.

Please get in touch using the methods listed on our contact us page.

Itchiness is a common side effect of IPL treatment. However, if you have intense itchiness which has not subsided after 24 hours, please stop using the device immediately and consult your GP before using SmoothSkin again.

You need to stop treating immediately.  We recommend you visit your GP / Medical Practice and ask for advice. In the meantime, contact us. Our trained advisers will send you a Health Questionnaire to fill out and return.  Once you have done that we will assist you and ensure you are not making any mistakes in your preparation or treatment regime.

SmoothSkin has clinically proven results, however, everyone is different. Treatment success can depend on a number of issues such as catching the hair at exactly the right stage of growth, or even hormone changes / imbalances.

Contact us for extra support and tips at any stage throughout your SmoothSkin journey. And remember, with SmoothSkin Bare, you can treat any stubborn areas, such as underarms, with multiple passes (running your device over the same area a maximum of 3 times).

To use stamp mode on any SmoothSkin system, simply place the handset on the skin, press and release the activation button. Remove from the skin before carefully re-applying to the next treatment area. This is best for small areas such as your underarms and face.

To use glide mode, place the handset on the skin, press and hold down the activation button, then glide the handset along the skin between flashes. Try to move the handset at a steady speed that gives full coverage without overlap or missed areas. This is best for larger areas such as your legs.

To avoid any possible interactions, skin should always be clean and dry before treatments. We would recommend an interval of at least one week between applying Odaban and using SmoothSkin products. This is because Odaban and other similar products often result in a toxic skin reaction, or inflammation. If there is inflammation in the skin at the time of IPL treatment there is a risk of skin burn.

No. To avoid any possible interactions, skin should always be clean and dry.

No – Do not use SmoothSkin if you are undergoing a self-tanning regime.  There may be photosensitive properties in the self-tan moisturisers that could affect your skin’s reaction to IPL.

Yes, SmoothSkin devices can be used year-round. We just ask you to be extra careful during the summer months, or if you’ve been away on holiday. There are some precautions to take before and after tanning – both via sunbeds and prolonged exposure to the sun, as this increases skin sensitivity (a little sun on your skin from being outside isn’t a problem!).

  • Tanning before using SmoothSkin:

* Wait at least 48 hours after tanning before you use SmoothSkin.

* Do not use SmoothSkin if you have sunburned skin and for as long as the sunburn persists.

* Be aware that all types of tanning darken the skin.

  • Tanning after using SmoothSkin:

* Your skin will be more sensitive directly after the treatment.

* Wait at least 24 hours or until all redness has disappeared before you expose treated areas to the sun.

* Cover treated areas when you go out into the sun or use a sunblock (*50 SPF) in the 48 hours after treatment.

Most areas of the body can be treated with the exception of: mucus membranes (i.e. e.g. inside nostrils, lips of mouth, ears, inner labia), directly on the genitals (including pubis bone, perineum and scrotum, or around the vagina or anus).

SmoothSkin is not recommended for use on the male face or beard, or directly on the scalp. The depth and thickness of this type of hair need to be targeted with a much higher level of energy to be effective, which means SmoothSkin is unlikely to produce the desired results. Hair density in these areas is very high, and so there’s a chance of burns being induced by the device. All the hairs close together could act as a single entity, the superficial temperature of the skin could increase above the damaged threshold, resulting in a burn.

SmoothSkin Bare has a single energy setting of 3J / cm2 that is suitable for all skin tones. It’s super speedy and lightweight with a full body treatment taking just 10 minutes, so if you’re tight on time Bare might be a better bet.

SmoothSkin Muse has 10 energy settings, ranging from 3 – 6 J / cm2, with the latest in IPL technology to automatically tailor your treatment to your skin tone, providing a  personalised treatment and maximising your results. If you can dedicate a little more time to each treatment to get longer-lasting results in the long-run, we’d recommend Muse.

  • If you want maximum speed and simplicity go for SmoothSkin Bare.
  • If you want a tailored beauty treatment with long-lasting results, SmoothSkin Muse is for you.
  • If you can dedicate more time to treatments to go longer between top-ups, go for SmoothSkin Muse.
  • If you’d prefer super speedy treatment sessions with more regular top-ups, we’d recommend SmoothSkin Bare.

Still not sure? Take our handy quiz  and find out.

How many treatments have you completed?

Hair growth is cyclical and IPL treatments are only effective during one of the three growing phases (called the Anagen phase).  Not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time which is why you need to keep up with your treatments.  You may have missed a treatment or perhaps you didn’t catch the hair at the right stage.

Remember, with SmoothSkin Bare, you can treat any stubborn areas, such as underarms, with multiple passes (running your device over the same area a maximum of 3 times).

If you need some help or advice, contact us.

Yes, all SmoothSkin devices are safe and gentle enough to treat the entire bikini area (including the bikini line, mons pubis, labia majora and perineum, to use the technical terms!) so if you want a Hollywood or Brazilian please feel free – just use extra caution to avoid treating the ‘inner parts’ of the bikini area, including labia minora, the vagina and anus as IPL is not suitable for treating these areas. If you’re using SmoothSkin Muse or Gold, this may also be a good time to turn on gentle mode.

Do not use the device directly on mucus membranes, the genitals or around the anus. These areas may have a darker skin colour and so to avoid injury they should not be treated.

Yes. All SmoothSkin devices are suitable for use on male pubic hair. We do advise using a little extra caution when treating – along with gentle mode if you have it available on your device.

Do not use the device directly on mucus membranes, directly on the genitals (pubis bone, perineum and scrotum) or around the anus. These areas may have a darker skin colour and so to avoid injury they should not be treated.

No. Never attempt to flash a SmoothSkin device near the eye area.

Yes, you can safely treat the face, cheek and jaw line, the upper lip, neck and chin areas. However, DO NOT use on eyebrows, eye lashes, the scalp, lips, nostrils and ears.

Smoothskin is not recommended for use on the male face or beard. The depth and thickness of this type of hair need to be targeted with a much higher level of energy to be effective, which means SmoothSkin is unlikely to produce the desired results. Hair density on the male face is also very high, and so there’s a chance of burns being induced by the device.

No. DO NOT USE near bathtubs, showers, basins or other vessels containing water. If your SmoothSkin device becomes wet, it should not be used. DO NOT use if the device has been exposed to water.

For IPL treatment to work efficiently you must remove any hair from above the surface of the skin prior to each treatment, but keeping the root in place to help target the follicle will ensure maximum efficacy – and so maximum results.

Ideally yes.  We understand shaving the face can be slightly daunting for women, but shaving really does give the best results. If you don’t feel comfortable shaving your face (or other sensitive areas!) we recommend clipping or trimming the hair as close to the skin as possible to prepare it for treatment. To do this, you can try using cosmetic scissors, an electric trimmer or exfoliating hair removal pads. Otherwise, feel free to wax or epilate.

Don’t forget though, for best results we really do recommend shaving. It may be scary at first but it’ll be worth it in the long run!

Of course! For the very best results from your treatment, we recommend shaving, but you can also wax, epilate or pluck any pesky hairs if you’d prefer.

For IPL treatment to work efficiently you must remove any hair from above the surface of the skin prior to each treatment, ideally while keeping the root in place.

For best results we do recommend shaving, but you can also wax or epilate. Don’t use depilatory cream though, just in case the formula reacts with the IPL treatment.

It’s important to follow the recommended treatment regime to get maximum results from your SmoothSkin device.

  • For SmoothSkin Muse, For Men, and Gold:

We advise treating once a week for 12 weeks initially, and then just topping up as required, usually once every 4 – 8 weeks to keep regrowth at bay.

  • For SmoothSkin Bare:

We advise treating once a week until you see the desired results, and then topping up as required, around once every 2 weeks, just to keep regrowth in check.

No, do not use gel. This was only needed with older IPL technologies and will only clog the nozzle and damage your device.

No – we recommend that you do not use more than once per week.  This will have no effect other than to irritate your skin.

Remember though, with SmoothSkin Bare, you can treat any stubborn areas, such as underarms, with multiple passes (running your device over the same area a maximum of 3 times).

No – SmoothSkin is not suitable for use on tattoos.

Of course! SmoothSkin devices are not gender specific. Just remember that whereas women can use SmoothSkin devices from the cheekbones down, we advise men to treat from the neck down only.

No, do not use SmoothSkin devices if you are pregnant or breast feeding, as our devices have not been tested with these individuals. We suggest that you wait 6 months post-pregnancy to start treatments to allow the body’s hormones to revert to normal.

IPL is unsuitable for treating grey, red or very light blonde (white) hair. Very fair and grey hair doesn’t contain enough melanin to transmit the light energy to the follicle, whilst red hair contains a different form of melanin altogether which isn’t responsive to IPL. It is possible to see results when treating darker blonde hair, but you may need a few extra treatments to get the same standard of hair reduction. If you’re tempted to try it but not sure whether your hair is suitable, remember we offer a 90-day money-back guarantee so you can really get to grips with the technology before deciding if it’s right for you. Find out more here.

SmoothSkin is suitable for all but the darkest skin tones. Before you order a SmoothSkin product, make sure your skin tone is suitable using the below chart.

No – do not use the device over large very dark freckles or moles.

We don’t recommend individuals under the age of 18 use SmoothSkin IPL devices. The devices have not been tested on this age group, and the body undergoes a number of hormonal changes during adolescence, so treatments may be less effective at this time due to rapid hair growth.

We suggest you seek medical advice as we can’t be sure of the depth or prominence of the veins.

No – SmoothSkin is not recommended for use on these areas.

No. We do not recommend SmoothSkin devices for use in people with diabetes.

No. If you suffer with epilepsy, the flashing light emitted from the SmoothSkin device may trigger a seizure or epileptic fit.

Yes – there are a number of conditions that may affect your suitability for IPL treatment.

These include (but are not limited to): skin cancer, or any other localised cancer in the areas to be treated; history of vascular disorder, such as the presence of varicose veins or vascular ectasia in the areas to be treated, skin which is sensitive to light and easily develops a rash or an allergic reaction; diabetes; lupus erythematodes; porphyria ; congestive heart disease; skin infections, eczema, burns, inflammation of hair follicles, open lacerations, abrasions, herpes simplex, wounds or lesions and haematomas in the areas to be treated.

This list isn’t exhaustive, if you need further clarification, please check with your doctor. We also recommend you check out our FAQ on medications.

Yes. Some medication can affect how you respond to IPL treatment, and as a result whether you are suitable to use SmoothSkin products.  There is a full list of unsuitable medications available here. Please check this before you order. Certain medications can make your skin more sensitive and a flash of intense pulsed light could cause injury, including Retin A, Accutane and/or other topical retinoids.

This list isn’t exhaustive, if you need further clarification, please check with your doctor. We also recommend you check out our FAQ on medical conditions.

There are several instances where unfortunately we don’t recommend the use of IPL treatment.

First up, IPL is not suitable to treat people with very dark skin, or Fitzpatrick skin tone VI. This is all down to the way in which the technology itself works. Very dark skin contains a high amount of pigment (melanin) and so will absorb more light, which, in extreme cases, can result in potential burns, discolouration or even scarring. All SmoothSkin devices are fitted with sensors to ensure that they do not fire on unsuitable skin tones, but before you order a SmoothSkin product, please make sure you’re suitable for IPL treatment using the below chart.

IPL is also unsuitable for treating grey, red or very light blonde (white) hair.

Finally, there are some extra cases where IPL is not recommended. These include a number of skin conditions; including eczema, varicose veins and skin cancer; medical conditions including diabetes or epilepsy, the use of some medications that can cause sensitivity to light including some acne treatments and anti-depressants; and even a number of tattoos or moles in the area you wish to treat. For more information, contact us.

The secret to staying silky smooth is to keep at it and stick to your treatment regime. With regular use, you will see fewer and fewer hairs growing back. These hairs should also be finer, lighter in colour and grow more slowly. As time goes on, you will be able to completely replace your shaving routine.

And remember, with SmoothSkin Bare you can treat any stubborn areas, such as underarms, with multiple passes (running your device over the same area a maximum of 3 times).

All SmoothSkin devices have been independently tested for efficacy (that’s the ability to produce the desired effect) and, of course, safety. If the device is used in accordance with the instruction manual, you shouldn’t experience any adverse side effects.

You might experience some minor skin reactions immediately after treatment such as redness or warmth, but this is nothing to worry about.

If you do notice any other side effects, stop and get in touch with us for advice on what to do next.

Yes. SmoothSkin uses the same IPL technology used in salons across the world to achieve outstanding results. The professional products, however, allow a trained therapist to use much higher energy levels than the home use IPL products in the market today. This just means that you may need to top-up more often to maintain your results. The trade off? You can use SmoothSkin in the comfort of your own home, in front of the tv, maybe even with a good cuppa or glass of wine (or both!).

SmoothSkin technology is harmless to the skin as long as it’s suitable for your skin tone and is used as instructed in the product manual.  Before you buy a SmoothSkin device, we advise that you check our skin tone chart using the image below.

All SmoothSkin devices contain integrated UV filters to protect your skin against harmful rays and the skin tone sensor on the handset prevents the system from flashing if it does not detect a valid skin tone.

SmoothSkin devices have been developed with safety at the forefront and are safe to use for eyes without the need for eye protection. Saying that, some users do find the flash bright and prefer to wear sunglasses or sun-safe goggles during treatments. This is absolutely ok, and completely up to you. You can also make sure you use SmoothSkin in a well lit room, to reduce the perceived brightness of the flash.

When using the device, we recommend you look away from the handset when firing onto your skin. The system is fitted with a safety feature to prevent firing into the air, however, you should never attempt to fire on to or close to the eye itself.

Not usually, most people just feel a slight tingling or a warm sensation. However, the sensation varies from person to person. People with coarse, dark hair may experience an initial sensation similar to that felt by the gentle flick of an elastic band.

SmoothSkin Muse, For Men and Gold all feature Gentle Mode, which can help you get used to the experience if you do find treatments a little uncomfortable at first.

Laser and IPL both work to prevent hair growth by using light and in turn heat to target the hair follicle, in correlation with the hair growth cycle. However, the technology used to deliver the light is really quite different – with the key difference being the kind of light itself.

In short, IPL devices produce a wide range of wavelengths of light to produce a single white flash. This light can appear with an orange/red glow when the device is flashed against the skin, like a camera flash. Lasers use one wavelength of light which creates a single beam, like a laser pointer.

As a result of these differences, laser and IPL treatments vary in terms of:

  • Treatment time: Because the beam of light used in laser treatments is very concentrated, laser devices have a very small treatment window. Thanks to the broader flash of light used in IPL, IPL devices feature a bigger treatment window and so can cover a much larger area at once, meaning a much faster treatment time in comparison to laser.
  • Pain rating: The single, more pointed beam of light used during laser treatment is often reported to be more painful than IPL treatment.
  • Cost: Laser light is expensive to generate, and so, in salons especially, laser treatment comes with a hefty price tag whereas IPL is often much more affordable.
  • Longevity of results: As a trade-off for the increased price tag and pain level, the results from laser treatment can mean fewer top-ups are required between sessions. But, as with any kind of light-based hair reduction, you’ll always need to continue with top-up treatments to stop hairs from growing back.
  • Safety: Laser light is very powerful and can even be dangerous. Because of this, at-home laser hair removal devices use significantly reduced power, especially in comparison to their expensive salon equivalent. The bonus of IPL treatment is that it’s much safer to use as the light is less concentrated, and so can be used at-home risk-free for long-lasting results.

To summarise, IPL can give the same standard of results as laser-treatments, as long as you follow the prescribed treatment regime – and keep on top of top-up treatments! In return for your dedication to your regime, you can save time, money and endless trips to the salon, completing your treatments in the comfort of your own home. What’s not to love?

SmoothSkin Bare flashes 100 times a minute, so you can treat your whole body (that’s legs, underarms, bikini line and face!) in just 10 minutes.

Depending on your skin tone, SmoothSkin Muse, Gold, and For Men flash around 50 times per minute. A whole body treatment (that’s legs, underarms, bikini line and face!) takes just 20 minutes.

As for ALL home-use IPL or laser treatments (don’t believe anyone who would tell you otherwise), one treatment won’t last forever. You will need to keep treating the hairs every once in a while to avoid hair growth starting up again.

Of course, everyone’s length of treatment is different (because we all have different skin, hair, lifestyle… even genetics play a role!) so once you complete the initial treatment period it’s mostly up to you to define what is the right regime for you. The great thing is that SmoothSkin devices will prevent hair regrowth as long as you keep treating regularly, so as long as you keep up with your treatments you’ll never have to experience stubbly legs or underarms again. Hoorah!

Interesting fact! Hair grows in 3 distinct and consecutive phases, and not all hairs are in the same phase at any one time. Because the IPL treatment is only effective in one particular phase (the Anagen ‘growth phase’ – since you ask), you should follow your treatment regime until you see the desired results. By following the recommended regime, you’re likely to zap any hairs you missed in previous treatments. Simple science!

IPL treatment is only effective in one particular phase (the Anagen ‘growth phase’ – since you ask), so in the first few weeks following your initial treatments, you will still see some hairs growing. Relax! These will likely be the hairs that were not treated in their growth phase (when IPL is most effective) so be sure to keep up with the treatments! Within 4 weeks, you should be seeing a reduction in hair regrowth. There will still be some hairs that need treating as you need to catch each hair in the right phase, but don’t worry, things will only get better from here on in – so keep it up!

SmoothSkin devices use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to break the hair cycle and prevent regrowth.

Light energy is transferred through the skin’s surface and absorbed by melanin present in the hair shaft. That light energy is converted to heat energy (below the surface of the skin), which stops the pesky hairs from growing back. Treated hairs naturally fall out over the course of a few days to 1-2 weeks.

Once you’ve completed the initial treatment period you will need to keep up with regular top-ups, but the great thing is that SmoothSkin devices will prevent hair regrowth as long as you keep treating regularly, so as long as you keep up with your treatments you’ll never have to experience stubbly legs or underarms again. All of SmoothSkin’s products are manufactured right here in the UK.

Way back in 1979, a scientist called Marc Clement stumbled across the basis of IPL technology – the technology that SmoothSkin uses to this day – when he accidentally ran a laser beam across his forearm and was surprised to spot that the hair didn’t grow back. Professor Clement went on to develop the world’s first hair removal lasers, and in 2002, he joined forces with three other local entrepreneurs (a scientist, an engineer and a businessman, to be precise) to create Cyden – the brains behind the SmoothSkin brand. In fact, two founding members still work for Cyden today, Professor Clement included.

With more than 30 years’ experience, SmoothSkin are the pros of the IPL hair removal world.  Not only do we design and make our products all here in the UK, but we also carry out our own research and even run our own clinical trials, all from our HQ in Swansea, South Wales, UK.
