IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Like laser, IPL Hair Removal provides permanent visible hair reduction, keeping you hair-free for longer by breaking the cycle of hair growth.
- Light energy is transferred through the skin’s surface and is absorbed by the melanin present in the hair shaft.
- The absorbed light energy is converted to heat energy (below the surface of the skin), which disables the hair follicle preventing further growth.
- Treated hairs naturally fall out over the course of a few days to 1-2 weeks.
IS IPL THE SAME AS LASER?
Similar, but not quite!
- Laser uses a single spectrum of concentrated light in one single colour
- IPL uses a much broader spectrum of light in various colours
Both methods target the melanin in the hair follicle, and can provide long-lasting results.
IS IPL PERMANENT?
With regular maintenance treatments to catch any pesky new hairs – yes! IPL will continue to prevent regrowth as long as you keep treating regularly. As for ALL home-use IPL or laser treatments (don’t believe anyone who would tell you otherwise), one treatment won’t last forever and it’s crucial that you stay on top of top-ups.
IS IPL SAFE?
IPL has been thoroughly tested for efficacy (that’s ability to produce the desired effect) and, of course, safety – for use on both the face and body. As long as it IPL used in accordance with the instruction manual, you shouldn’t experience any adverse side effects. SmoothSkin devices all feature a skin tone sensor system that prevents it from flashing if it does not detect a valid, safe skin tone.
All SmoothSkin devices feature safety sensors designed to make sure your skintone is safe to receive IPL treatment, before a single flash is fired.
HOW LONG DOES IPL TAKE?
With Smoothkin Bare+ you can treat your whole body in just ten minutes. And with recent trials having shown visible results after just 4 treatments, you could start seeing results in a flash.
In terms of each treatment session, SmoothSkin Bare+ is the fastest device in town with a full body treatment (that’s legs, underarms, face and bikini) taking just 10 minutes.
DOES IPL REALLY WORK?
Yes! A number of clinically approved trials have proven that when used properly IPL can provide significant permanent hair reduction.
Inspired by in-salon technology, SmoothSkin devices use its 30+ years of clinical and technological expertise to create an effective home solution. No more salon appointments, tailor your treatments around your own schedule.
DOES IPL HURT?
Not usually. Most people describe the sensation of IPL as warm flick against the skin but this can vary person to person, and between treatment areas.
IS IPL SUITABLE FOR ME?
Due to the way the technology itself works, IPL isn’t suitable for the darkest skin tones, or Fitzpatrick skin tone 6. IPL is also not recommended for use on red, grey or very light (blonde) hair. Take a quick look at the chart to find out whether you’re suitable.
