What is IPL?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a light-based hair removal method, which targets the melanin (pigment) inside the hair to interrupt the hair growth cycle and prevent hair regrowth, without damaging the skin.
How IPL works
1. The light energy is transferred through the skin’s surface and is absorbed by the melanin present in the hair shaft
2. The absorbed light is converted to heat energy (below the surface of the skin), which disables the hair follicle preventing further growth
3. Treated hairs naturally fall out over a period which can vary from a few days to 1-2 weeks depending on the individual
4. Repeat every week for 12 weeks to catch each hair during its growth phase
Why do we recommend a 12 week cycle?
Your body’s hair growth cycle consists of 3 phases. Not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time and IPL technology is only effective in the anagen/growth phase. We therefore recommend you use the device for 12 weeks to ensure you have treated each hair at least once during its growth phase.
Is IPL suitable for me?
IPL technology is based on the relation between melanin in the skin and hair, which means it can be ineffective for light-haired users and unsafe for deep-skinned users. IPL is very effective on skin tones 1-5 and on blonde to dark hair.
SmoothSkin devices come with a built-in skin tone sensor, meaning it will only flash on skin tones that are safe to receive IPL, preventing any harm to your skin.
What does a treatment feel like?
A SmoothSkin treatment can feel a little unusual at first. Most users describe it as a warm sensation which doesn’t feel painful.
*Assessed in a Bare+ at-home user study (Feb 2021) for 13 weeks across multiple body areas (underarm, lower leg and small area).
Users shared subjective, self-reported results on the efficacy and user satisfaction of SmoothSkin devices.
