IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Like laser, IPL Hair Removal is designed to help break the cycle of hair growth by targeting the hair root or follicle.
Is IPL the same as laser?
Similar, but not quite!
Both methods target the melanin in the hair follicle, and can provide long-lasting results. Because laser treatment focuses light into the follicle and not the skin, it is often recommended for darker skin tones which may not be suited to IPL treatment.

Is IPL permanent?
With regular maintenance treatments to catch any pesky new hairs – yes! IPL will continue to prevent regrowth as long as you keep treating regularly. As for ALL home-use IPL or laser treatments (don’t believe anyone who would tell you otherwise), one treatment won’t last forever and it’s crucial that you stay on top of top-ups.
Is IPL safe?
IPL has been thoroughly tested for efficacy (ability to produce the desired effect) and safety. As long as it is used in accordance with the instruction manual, you shouldn’t experience any adverse side effects.
SmoothSkin devices all feature a skin tone sensor system that prevents it from flashing if it does not detect a valid, safe skin tone.
How long does IPL take?
Recent trials have shown reduction of hair after just 4 treatments, so in one month you could start to see results. With SmoothSkin Muse, our most powerful device, you can expect to see up to 92% hair reduction after 4 weeks of treatment!
In terms of each treatment session, SmoothSkin Bare is the fastest device in town with a full body treatment (that’s legs, underarms, face and bikini) taking just 10 minutes, with Gold taking around 20 minutes. Phew!
Does IPL really work?
Yes! A number of clinically approved trials have proven that when used properly, IPL cam provide significant permanent hair reduction.
Does IPL hurt?
Not usually. Most people describe it as a slight tingling or a warm sensation. However, the sensation varies from person to person, and from one treatment area to another. People with coarse, dark hair may experience an initial sensation similar to that of a gentle flick against the skin.
SmoothSkin Gold also features a handy gentle mode – great for sensitive areas or first-time users!
Is IPL suitable for me?
Due to the way the technology itself works, IPL isn’t suitable for the darkest skin tones, or Fitzpatrick skin tone 6. If you would like to know if you are suitable, take a look at the chart above. IPL is also not recommended for use on red, grey or very light (blonde) hair.
SmoothSkin products all feature a special sensor that checks your skin tone is suitable before treatment. SmoothSkin Gold features the latest in IPL technology, which automatically selects the right setting for you giving a personalised treatment for maximum results.
