What is IPL hair removal?

So, what is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL Hair Removal is designed to help break the cycle of hair growth by targeting the hair root or follicle.

  1. The light energy is transferred through the skin’s surface and is absorbed by the melanin present in the hair shaft.
  2. The absorbed light energy is converted to heat energy (below the surface of the skin), which disables the hair follicle preventing further growth.
  3.  Treated hairs naturally fall out over the course of a few days to 1-2 weeks.

Similar, but not quite!

  • Laser uses a single spectrum of concentrated light in one single colour & wavelength.
  • IPL uses a much broader spectrum of light in various colours & wavelengths.

Both methods target the melanin in the hair follicle, and  can provide long-lasting results. Because laser treatment focuses light into the follicle and not the skin, it is often recommended for darker skin tones which may not be suited to IPL treatment.

How long do treatments take?

Everybody’s hair is completely different. Different colour, thickness and density means some people will see results faster than others and will experience hair removal at different stages. Depending on which areas you are treating the time can vary, but as a guide SmoothSkin Gold takjes around 20 minutes, and Bare 10 minutes, for a full body treatment – legs, underarms, bikini and face.

Is IPL suitable for me?

SmoothSkin Gold and SmoothSkin Bare are intended for use on light, medium and dark skin tones up to and including skin tone 5. Both devices incorporate Skin Tone Sensors that measure the colour of your skin and will prevent use if your skin tone is too dark. SmoothSkin IPL systems are intended for use on naturally black or brown hair. IPL is not as effective on white, grey, blonde, or red hair.*

*we advise reading the warnings and precautions in the manual for more information on safety and suitability.

Darker Skin Tones

Darker skin tones contain more melanin which can absorb more of the light energy meaning treating at the correct energy level is important. With SmoothSkin Bare, our skin tone sensor means the device will only flash if a suitable skin tone is detected. For skin tones which are too dark to treat, the illuminators around the activation button will illuminate red and cannot be activated.

With SmoothSkin Gold, our Detect and Set feature ensures maximum safety by measuring skin tones in 10 levels.

  • For the lightest skin tones, all the lights on the power bars at either side of the treatment window will be illuminated.
  • For the darkest skin tone, one light will be illuminated which means the skin tone is still suitable to treat.
  • For skin tones which are too dark to treat, the device will illuminate red and cannot be activated.

Gentle Mode

If you find IPL treatment uncomfortable or a little too painful, SmoothSkin Gold features a handy Gentle Mode, which reduces the power output to make treatments as comfortable as possible.

Please refer to the manual for more information on using Gentle Mode.
